About the Conference

The Canadian Conference on Physician Leadership (CCPL) offers physicians at all stages of their careers the opportunity to complement their clinical expertise with practical leadership and management skills, to network with colleagues and thought leaders, and to celebrate physician leadership.

Returning to fully in person, the theme of the 2023 conference is Healing our Health System: Leadership for Renewal. Through keynote speakers, a debate session and workshops, we will explore how physicians can influence and lead change to renew our ailing health system.

An awards ceremony will celebrate the Chris Carruthers Excellence in Medical Leadership Award and our latest Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) recipients.

What could I gain from attending THIS CONFERENCE?

Through face-to-face discussions with colleagues and international experts, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Recognize how the idea of hope and a ‘Renew the Future’ perspective can shift one’s position to becoming an active protagonist in making the changes the healthcare system needs.
  • Know what is meant by Slow Medicine and how medicine is better understood as a craft and a profession than as a commodity.
  • Discuss how leaders can apply a systems framework to address intractable healthcare problems.
  • Identify the elements of a learning and work environment that promotes critical consciousness development, as well as the flourishing of diverse members, within it.
  • Develop an approach to early intervention in conflict to promote constructive engagement and conflict solutions.
  • Describe collaborative design and how it can be applied to problem-solving to improve patient care.
  • Recognize how leadership responses can help and harm teams and individuals that are physically and emotionally depleted.
  • Identify and co-create key strategies used in the Emergency Health Services system of care that can be applied to your own local healthcare ecosystem.
  • Discuss and practise the capabilities of the LEADS leadership framework through the sharing of personal and professional issues in a fireside chat format.
  • Explore perspectives on the potential for digital health and virtual care to enhance patient experiences, during a time of strained healthcare resources.
  • Define and examine a holistic applicant review and outcomes-based approach to selecting and hiring to meet community-identified needs.
  • Discuss specific methods to communicate clearly, run effective meetings and have high stakes conversations.

Why should I attend?

  • To acquire skills to help you achieve your desired results
  • Network and learn with and from your peers
